Concelex, in partnership with Bog’Art, selected by Nuclearelectrica for complex works at the Dry Storage for Burnt Fuel facility at CNE Cernavodă

Concelex, in partnership with Bog’Art—two of Romania’s leading construction companies—has been selected by Nuclearelectrica to carry out complex works at the Dry Storage for Burnt Fuel (DICA) facility at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant (CNE Cernavodă). The contract is valued at 213.7 million lei and includes the construction of six new storage modules and a high-capacity gantry crane.

The project we undertaking at CNE Cernavodă is an honor and a clear validation of our experience in energy-sector constructions. In previous projects, we have consistently delivered quality and precision in environments with high technical and safety requirements. Our portfolio includes similar works at DICA, the construction of Romania’s only new hyperbolic cooling tower in the last 30 years, as well as numerous rehabilitation, modernization, and upgrade projects for major energy companies. This know-how enables us to deliver with rigor and predictability,” said Cătălin Vișan, Deputy General Manager, Concelex.

The newly signed contract with Nuclearelectrica covers the execution of modules 18 to 23 of the DICA facility, including the installation of fuel storage cylinders and related components, utility and perimeter works, as well as the design, manufacturing, installation, and testing of a gantry crane.

We continue to take on the role of a trusted builder in large-scale projects that have long-term impact on national infrastructure. Following our involvement in repurposing existing structures on the Unit 5 site—from a nuclear power plant configuration to support facilities for Units 1 and 2 currently in operation, and for future Units 3 and 4—this new project marks a natural step in strengthening Bog’Art’s commitment to supporting critical investments in the energy sector, alongside strong partners, within an ambitious timeline and with responsibility toward the community,” said Sorin Greu, General Manager, Bog’Art.

The works begin this month and will be carried out in phases over a ten-year period. The first module, number 18, is scheduled for completion by December 2026. The modules will be built using MACSTOR 400 technology, which offers enhanced storage security and more efficient use of DICA’s capacity.

The expansion of the Dry Storage for Burnt Fuel facility at CNE Cernavodă is part of the broader context of the refurbishment project for Unit 1, which will extend its operational life by another 30-year cycle, and the development of Units 3 and 4, which require additional storage capacity.
